an engagement party for a bride-to-be

an engagement party for a bride-to-be

{I originally posted this this a few weeks ago, but it got lost in the Great Blog Erase of 2015 – thankfully, most of the blog content was recovered after about a week, but a few of the most recent posts were gone for good. So here it is again!}

One of my husband’s brothers is getting married this fall {yay!}, and several weeks ago his mom, sister and sister’s-in-law and I had the privilege of throwing the bride-to-be a “welcome to the family” brunch. It was so fun! We had lots of ideas of ways to make the engagement party special without breaking the bank, and we kept track of them on a group Pinterest board {have you ever tried using a group board for something like this? It’s so handy!}.

an engagement party for a bride-to-be | the Path Less TraveledWe used our home as the location on a Saturday morning, and for decorations were able to stick almost entirely to things I already had in my stash, and I made a few banners and personalized cake toppers for a special touch.
a tea party brunch for a bride-to-be | the Path Less Traveled an engagement party brunch for a bride-to-be - layers of lace and lots of pink and gold make it a romance filled event! | the Path Less Traveled Over the table, I had John {he so graciously offered to help with the decorating as I was pulling together the last minute details!} hang up a few of these pink lanterns, mixed with white lace lanterns and some white honeycomb balls, all of which were in my party decoration box. I’ve had all of them for a while now, and they’ve been used over and over and held up so well!

party planning tip: Having re-usable party decoration items in your hostess arsenal is a great way to keep costs down, allowing you to focus your party budget on other areas!DSC_0004 Each place setting had one of these gilded frames on it as a favor for the girls to take home – I found the frames in the dollar bin at Michaels, and then personalized them with little prints {that I made on our computer, and then “dry stamped” a large heart over the text} and some lace trim in a bow.A "Bride-To-Be" banner sets the bride's seat at the party apart | the Path Less TraveledOne of the things I made up just for the party was this pair of Bride To Be banners – we have a version in our shop, but I wanted them to be even a little bit more special, and in two layers since I had this vision in my head of decorating her chair with them. I used doilies that I dyed a light pink to back the white letters, and the resulting effect was quite romantic!
a vintage-style tea party brunch for a bride-to-be | the Path Less Traveled #BecomingASmillie banner to celebrate a bride-to-be | the Path Less Traveled I made a #BecomingASmillie {her new last name} banner for over the window in the same style, and everyone loved it! It was quite cute, and the hashtag may even get used as the one for her wedding prep. :)dress up the chairs with vintage pillow cases and some satin ribbon - so romantic! | the Path Less TraveledFor the chair decor, we took my stash of vintage embroidered pillowcases and slipped on over the back of each chair, and then tied each with a pink satin bow.

I used a white, every day table cloth layered with a vintage pink damask table cloth and vintage damask napkins. For the table settings, I layered our white every day plates {these} with some vintage salad plates, and used the vintage silver plated table ware I inherited from a family member. The goblets were find at Marshall’s a while ago, and the tea set was from my grandma. It all came together so beautifully!DSC_0014 a feminine tea party style brunch for a bride-to-be | the Path Less TraveledTo accent the rest of the room, I had John hang up a Lace Doily Garland {looping back and forth across the room}, a Glitter Gold Confetti Garland {in the area over the table} and a Large Paper Hearts Garland in pink around the doorway. The garlands added an additional air of romance and festivity, taking the room from feeling like I had just set the table for the party to feeling like this party was an event. Such a difference!
a feminine tea party style brunch for a bride-to-be | the Path Less Traveled I loved having a reason to get out my special tea set! My sister-in-law made the Strawberry Iced Tea, and – wow. It was good!DSC_0017 My mother-in-law, sister-in-law and I each made a few dishes share, and the resulting buffet was delicious!personalize a tray of desserts with the initials of the couple-to-be! It was a special time to welcome Tessa to the family. We all had full, hectic weeks leading up to the day, but taking the time to prepare for a special, out of the ordinary occasion and to visit with each other for a few hours was a blessing to each of the girls. Times like a wedding only come along a few times in a family’s history, and making them with a little fanfare is worth it!

Have you had a chance to celebrate your family recently? I’d love to hear about it!

sweet baby

sweet baby

Because some days, I just need a reminder to soak in this sweet baby.

sweet baby girl: the Path Less TraveledBecause really, no matter how many things should be done today, being her mother and loving on her is one the few that absolutely need to be done.

And one of the few things I will never, ever regret taking the time to cherish.

What bit of your life do you need to slow down and cherish today? May you take a moment this evening to soak in those that are dear to you, to worship the One Who gave them, and to rest. {and I need to hear this just as much as you, if not more!}

a recap of love

a recap of love

Did you have a lovely Mother’s Day yesterday? I know it’s a joy-full day for some of you and a bittersweet day for others, and for some of you a day full of sorrow – whatever your emotion, I hope you were able to enjoy the spring day and soak in the ones you love <3

Mother's Day RosesOur Mother’s Day was full of family – both our imediate little brood {who woke up at 7, crying of course … the dreamed-of breakfast in bed might need to wait a few more years!} and my husband’s family.

As far as gifts go, there are two that are making me smile: last weekend John sent me to Lowe’s to pick out some flowers, and I brought home this lovely light pink Knock Out Rose, and it’s already blooming! I LOVE flowers, especially roses, and seeing this out in the yard from the kitchen window has definitely made me feel loved <3

And then yesterday afternoon I went shopping with two of my sister-in-laws for some summer wardrobe refreshers , and I found the sweetest white sundress {and it was 50% cheaper in the store than online – score!}.

Some of the reviews online say that they think it’s a bit short, but being a bit short myself I found it to be the perfect skim-my-knees length :) Now that I’m almost back to my pre-baby weight {notice I didn’t say “shape?”}, I’m really looking forward to wearing pretty little things again! And maybe John and I can go out somewhere? {Sweetie, that was a hint …}

But the best gift? The kiddos coming up to me throughout the day, throwing their arms around me and declaring “happy birthday, Mommy!” or “happy Valentine’s Day, Mommy!” or “guess what? I love you Mommy!” and then near the end of the day {when they were starting to get the hang of it} “happy Mom’s Day, Mommy!”. {melts me every time!}

Love to you all,

XO

customer love – proposal edition!

customer love – proposal edition!

I was thrilled to be contacted by a customer a while back, asking if I could help him with an order that he was planning to use as part of his proposal{!} to his girlfriend. Thrilled is an understatement – because what girl doesn’t love a bit of romance? :)

His plan was to make up a batch of heart shaped pancakes and top them with several of my stamped heart toppers, both the “BE MINE” and “LOVE” versions. He contacted me a few weeks later saying that it had gone perfectly! I can only imagine how delighted she was to be greeted with the breakfast and declaration of his love <3

customer love – wedding edition!

customer love – wedding edition!

From time to time, I get an email from a customer with photos of how they’ve used their purchases in their event – today I have a wedding edition that I’d like to share. I love these photos!

From the bride: “You’ll see in the second picture it says “class of…” It’s because we planned an outdoor wedding in west Texas and it just doesn’t rain here, but it did on our wedding day! We relocated our wedding to the High School my husband teaches at, with the help of our gracious friends and family. Little details like the cupcake hearts helped our wedding to still be “us” even with the last minute changes.”

You can see more of the wedding {here} – it looks like the day turned out perfect! Aren’t the photos just delightful?! Janelle, I’m so thrilled that you chose to use my creations to be a part of your wedding, and that you shared the photos with us!

Would you like to add a similar touch to your own event? The cupcake toppers that Janelle used can be found {here}! If you’d like, you can see other customer love posts {here} – do you have photos that you’d like to share? If you Instagram, tag them with the hashtag #thepathlesstraveledmarket, or email them to me at elizabeth(at)pltmarket.com and I’ll feature them here!

How-Tuesday: anniversary keepsake art

How-Tuesday: anniversary keepsake art

anniversary keepsake art via the Path Less Traveled Come this Friday, my husband and I will have been married for 5 years. 5 amazing years!

To celebrate that milestone, I have a sweet anniversary keepsake that I’d like to share with you for today’s How-Tuesday – of course, it doesn’t just have to be for an anniversary. You could make a version of this for any special photo: an engaged couple, babies, graduations …. just switch out the marriage vows for a quote or poem and viola! A new piece of art to grace your wall {or to use as a gift – this would make a lovely, cherished gift!}.

anniversary keepsake art via the Path Less Traveled materials needed: your marriage vows {or whatever poem/quote that you’d like to use}, lined paper, vellum {or tracing paper}, a fine point pen, your photo, a frame

optional materials {not pictured}: photo corners, photo matanniversary keepsake art via the Path Less Traveled You’ll need to determine the area that you’d like your writing to cover – if you’d like it to go all the way across your frame or just be centered over your photo. Place your vellum over the lined paper and start writing. {or maybe, if you’re nervous, practice on some scratch paper before starting on the vellum} Take your time! anniversary keepsake art via the Path Less TraveledOnce you’ve finished writing – being careful not to smudge the ink as you go along – you can put the layers of the art together. I used an 11×14 frame with a 4×6 photo, and so of course need a mat to fill out the frame. :) The layers, as I stacked them, are: glass, vellum, mat, photo, cardboard reinforcer that came with frame and frame back.

– Because I chose to place the vellum over the mat instead of under it, I used white photo corners to anchor the corners and add another layer of texture.

Once you have the layers adjusted to your satisfaction, carefully pop them in the frame and secure it. Then either wrap it {if using as a gift} or display on your wall – you’re done!

I can hardly believe that 5 years have already gone by – being married to John has been a blessing each and every day.

This project is a great way for us to be able to see {and be reminded of} our vows on a daily basis, and it has the added effect of renewing my gratefulness for him when I see how he’s fulfilling his vows on a daily basis. God gave me a winner! The congregation at our wedding laughed as I jumped with giddy joy when I heard John say “I do”, and I love being reminded of that moment – and his continuing faithfulness – each day!
